Protein • Builds and maintains body tissues • 2 types • Complete (containing 9 amino acids) • Incomplete (lacking one or more amino acids) • Muscles and organs made up of proteins • Makes haemoglobin (cells carrying oxygen) • Daily amount= 10% • Sources • beef, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, etc…
Vitamins • Substances eaten that boost our bodies • Two Types • Fat Soluble • Water Soluble • Fat soluble stored in fat tissues & liver • Daily intake depends on which vitamins (K, D, C, etc…) • Vitamins are in these foods • beef, poultry, nuts, citrus fruit etc…
Minerals • Boost immune system and support growth • 2 types • Macro (calcium, sodium, etc…) • Trace (chromium, copper, etc…) • Inorganic elements coming from soil and water • Help cells and organs do specific jobs • Sources • Salt, red meat, nuts, cocoa, etc…
Fibre • helps clean intestines by moving bowel movements • 2 types • Soluble (dissolves water) • Un-soluble (doesn’t dissolve water) • Boosts immune system • Slows absorption of sugar • Sources • Cereals, peas, artichokes, etc…
Water • Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen • Makes up over half your body weight • If not enough you can become dehydrated • Dehydration can cause sickness and slow reflexes • Cells depend on water to survive • Cant live without for over 3 days
