3G.IP Mission Statement • Actively promote a common IP based wireless system for third generation mobile communications technology to ensure rapid standards development and take up by operators, vendors and application developers • Drive for completion of the standardization for an all IP based Wireless Network Architecture in 3GPP Release 5 and 6 • Define the high level direction and evolution of future releases of the all IP network beyond 3GPP Release 5 • Review and evaluate alternative wireless architectures and strive for industry convergence on all-IP architectures • Develop agreements between carriers for implementation direction and services requirements and priorities • Promote alignment between wireless and fixed IP architectures
3G.IP 2002 Goals • Drive the All-IP Standards Development • Perform a risk analysis of 3GPP release 5 and release 6 • Prioritize content for 3GPP release 5 and 6 • Drive for release 5 completion 3/2002 and release 6 completion by 3/2003 • Support work in 3GPP by: • focusing resources to initiate and complete work items • consensus building on critical items • Lobby IETF by individual companies rather than by 3G.IP
3G.IP 2002 Goals (continued) • Define the Future Evolution and Roadmap • Create a long term all-IP target architecture, with industry convergence as the goal • Architecture to be based on business and technical issues and benefits, including consideration of backwards compatibility • Adapt technical detail to the SDO to be influenced by providing high level technical contributions • Derive the 3G.IP evolution plan for release 6 onwards • Identify candidates for release 6 and 7 content and scheduling • Consider the work of other related fora (e.g. MWIF, ITU) and manage relationships with other fora
3G.IP 2002 Goals (continued) • Lobby as a Market Representation Organization • Assume a communications and marketing role to encourage early adoption of all-IP technology • Assume a leadership role to produce a practical staged plan, and then lobby industry and standards bodies (including 3GPP through the 3G.IP MRP status)

3G.IP Marketing and Communication • Produces a practical staged plan, and then lobbies the industry and standards bodies (including 3GPP through the 3G.IP MRP status) • Provides a venue for suggesting new market requirements to 3GPP and other industry groups/SDOs • Develops 3G.IP Market Requirements and Roadmap • Develops 3G.IP input into 3GPP as a MRP • Promotes the all-IP architecture to ensure rapid standards development and take up by operators, vendors and application developers
3G.IP Ad-Hoc groups • Focus 3G.IP on key technical issues that are not adequately addressed in 3GPP or other SDOs • Focus and agree on high level assumptions and design architecture principles • Have 3GPP and SDOs do the detailed work • Typical process for initiating an Ad-hoc • Proposed and presented to the management steering team or on the e-mail reflector • Communication of a proposal is strongly encouraged prior to the meeting • As required, discussed during the meeting sessions or in between 3G.IP meetings • Approved by the management/steering group • Ad-hoc initiation proposal should at least include • Description • 3G.IP Objective/Expectation • Specific duration • (guideline: Initiation at one meeting with 2 subsequent 3G.IP meetings)
