Advertisers use many different techniques to get the consumers attention. Many use more than one technique at a time to try to influence as many people as they can.
Nostalgia • Plain folks, back to nature • “Just the way grandma used to make it” • “Back in the good old days” feeling
Bandwagon • Everyone who is anyone is buying this product. • Makes you feel like you only have a limited time. • You don’t want to be left out!
Transfer / Fantasy • Champions, famous athletes, celebrities are used to sell a product. • Advertisers hope that the consumer will transfer the qualities of the product to themselves and want to purchase the item.
Humor • People tend to remember an ad if it makes them laugh. • May purchase the product because of the positive association with it.
Sense Appeal • Sounds or pictures that appeal to the senses are featured. • Even catchy songs or music is used to stick with you.
Statistics • People tend to be impressed with “facts” and numbers even if they have little or no meaning.
Testimonial • People testify that they use the product so you should too.
