Facilities • Youth surveyed were in 22 juvenile correctional facilities across the state, including: • Mille Lacs Academy • First City School • Epsilon Program • Pines School • MCF- Red Wing • Prairie Lakes School • Woodland Hills Academy • Arrowhead Juvenile Justice Center • Boys Totem Town 584 surveys were completed
Demographics 54% of students 16 or 17 years old; 31% are 15 and younger
Whether Youth Currently or Have Received Free/Reduced Price School Lunch
Conclusions • Youth in Minnesota’s correctional facilities experience higher rates of personal trauma, family drug and alcohol use and mental health issues than do youth in mainstream schools. • Juvenile justice has been the primary referral for youth with mental illness • Correctional facilities are de facto mental health and special education providers
