  3. 8th February – Prešernov dan, dan kulture • Free entrance to museums, galleries etc. • Famous actors read Prešeren’s poems in front of his monument in Ljubljana • Awards for the greatest achievements in culture

  4. Publishing and reading • 4000 titles published every year (10 % is fiction) • Small market • Very expensive books • Many public libraries – 2nd loan rate in Europe

  5. Theatre – gledališče • 1789 Anton Tomaž Linhart wrote the first Slovene drama • 38 professional theatres and theatre groups (and many amateur groups) • Around 1 million tickets are sold per year • Many festivals: Borštnik festival (awards for best productions in each year), Ana Desetnica street theatre festival

  6. Music – glasba • 1701 Academia Philharmonicorum • Public love for music – choirs • Folk music phenomenon – group Avseniki • Love for Eurovision contest • Some internationally recognized contemporary groups: • Laibach • Siddharta • Terra Folk

Slovene film – slovenski film • Slovene film fund helps with funding new Slovene productions • Many films made from the novels • Very successful films: • Kekec • Kruh in mleko (Lion of the Future, Venice, 2001) • Petelinji zajtrk (126.275 tickets in 2007) • Film festival in Ljubljana (Liffe) – internationally recognised

  8. Painting – slikarstvo • Around 50 permanent galleries • Many occasional exhibitions • Mostly known painters are impressionists (Grohar, Strnen)
