  2. What is Privacy? • The Oxford English Dictionary says that privacy is “the state or condition of being alone, undisturbed, or free from public attention, as a matter of choice or right; seclusion; freedom from interference or intrusion.”

  3. What is Choose Privacy Week? • Since 2010, the ALA has sponsored Choose Privacy Week, which is designed to raise awareness about how much information patrons give to others and how much information is collected by outside organizations. • Observed annually May 1-7 • 2015’s observation is Friday May 1-Thursday May 7 • Who here has celebrated Choose Privacy Week?

  12. Why Should a College Library Care? • Our patrons, primarily young adults, are vulnerable. • Hastings College has never celebrated Choose Privacy Week, although we do celebrate other ALA sponsored events like Banned Books Week and National Library Week. • Because of my interest in privacy and freedom of information, I decided to begin developing Perkins Library’s first celebration of this initiative with a series of events.

  13. Why Do I Care? • Intellectual Freedom • Academic Integrity • Safety • Personally and Professionally • My Own Experiences

  16. Our Intentions • To increase awareness of privacy issues • To demonstrate the real-world implications of loss of privacy • To assist students in educating and protecting themselves • To demonstrate the library’s quality as a social hub • To document the events for publicity and evaluation purposes • To evaluate the success of the workshop by handing out surveys at the end of the event (and before the food)

  17. Challenges • Last day of the semester is May 8th • Planning weekend events is tricky because a lot of our students leave • Limited lab space means a limited number of patrons can attend • Funding an additional program • Fortunately the RVLS Grant application came just in time

  18. Future Plans and Ideas • Campus-wide movie showing • Contest and prizes • Awareness throughout the year • Panel discussion • Developing/cultivating materials that professors can use in their own classes • Town hall meeting • Coordinate with our First Year Program to discuss this with Freshman before they start classes
