  1. FANS An Airline Perspective

  2. Some facts • 1983 A group of experts, tasked by ICAO made recommendations to upgrade the Communication, Navigation and Surveillance systems. • 1989 A second group was created aiming at the implementation of the CNS/ATM concept. • 1991 This concept was endorsed by the tenth Air Nav Conference. • 1995 FANS was first implemented in the South Pacific. • 2002 LAN starts FANS operations. • A LAN A340 was the first airliner data linking with Canarias, which is an honor. Next

  3. FANS curriculum vitae • First Name: FANS • Last Name: A for AIRBUS, 1 for BOEING. • Age: 10 years old. • Birth date: 1995. • Birth place: South Pacific Ocean. • Occupation: ADS/CPDLC when logged on, off duty the rest of the time. • Skills: Capable of understanding 179 Preformatted messages and answering in 88 preformatted ways. he is also capable to repeat what ever a pilot or ATC controller is saying (free text skill) Next

  4. FANS curriculum vitae Con’t • Language: English • Favorite colors: WHITE, GREEN, AMBER, CYAN which he uses always the same way (AIRBUS Interface) • Most used words: WILCO, ROGER, STANDBY. • Preferred Media: VHF, SATCOM. • Service providers: INMARSAT, ARINC, SITA (Internetworking) Next

  5. HELLO, MY NAME IS FANS THIS IS THE AIRBUS DCDU WHICH IS VERY PILOT FRIENDLY AND EASIER TO USE THAN A GAMEBOY! Next

  6. CPDLC IS THE WAY A PILOT AND A CONTROLLER TALK IN A DIGITAL ENVIROMENT IMPROVING HF COMM SYSTEMS USED BEFORE Next

  7. ADS IS THE WAY A CONTROLLER TALK WITH AN FMS WITHOUT PILOT INPUT BY AUTOMATING AND CUSTOMIZING REPORTS Next

  8. MCDU IS USED BY PILOTS TO PREPARE REQUESTS REPORTS AND TO LOG ON TO THE SYSTEM AND EVEN TO DECLARE EMERGENCIES Next

  9. LIKE CHRISTIAN TOLD YOU, MY FAVOURITE COLORS ARE AMBER, WHITE, CYAN AND GREEN Next

  10. I USE NORMAL VIDEO TO DISPLAY AN UPLINK MESSAGE SHOWING GREEN FONTS OVER BLACK SCREEN Next

  11. AND REVERSE VIDEO TO DISPLAY A DOWNLINK MESSAGE FROM THE PILOT SHOWING BLACK FONTS OVER GREEN SCREEN Next

  12. I HAVE SOME TOOLS TO ALERT PILOTS OF AN INCOMING MESSAGE AND REMIND THEM TO MAKE CHANGES IN THEIR FMS OR FLIGHT PATH AS I AM NOT AUTHORIZED TO DO SO Next

  13. TWO CYAN ATC MSG LIGHTS AND A RING TONE WICH WAS ELECTED BY A GREAT MAJORITY OF THE CONSULTED PILOTS… JUST WAIT 15 SECONDS FOR NORMAL AND INMEDIATELY IF EMERGENCY Next

  14. 2115Z TO GCCC CTL OPEN REQUEST WEATHER DEVIATION UP TO LEFT 15NM OF ROUTE *CANCEL <OTHER SEND * Request deviation for build ups. Request deviation to avoid some CB´s in front. Request deviation for bad weather. Request 15 left because of bad weather ahead. We got some clouds we want to avoid Etc… Usually followed by a “SAY AGAIN” from the ATC if not English fluent, adding confusion and increasing workload. This is the only way a pilot asks for weather Deviations using FANS In Kenya, Spain, USA or Chile. This is done using message nº27 in my list of preformatted downlink messages. Next

  15. FANS • FANS is no longer what it stands for (future) FANS is a specific and present Communication system for pilots/Aircrafts and Controllers. (eg. FANS equipped aircrafts) • Based on ACARS (character oriented) protocol. • Used only in Remote/Oceanic Airspace. • 120 second round trip delay, 95% of the time. Even better than HF voice communication but, unacceptable for Continental and Terminal Airspace. Next

  16. FANS A+ • Upgrade Software available for AIRBUS ATSU´s. • Improve current package (FANS A+ basics) • ADS improvements • Addition of CPDLC elements • Extends the use of data link services (FANS A+ services) • VDL Mode 2 • HFDL Capability for ATC • DCL / OCL and D-ATIS (ATS623 protocol) • LAN is upgrading its system. Next

  17. FANS operation • For LAN pilots it has been a very good experience working with FANS. • Friendly Crew Interfaces (DCDU, MCDU, ALERTS/LIGHTS) • Easy and work load-reducer Human-Machine Interface. • Increasing confidence about ATC work. • Reducing occurrence of pilot/ATC errors leading to conflict events. Next

  18. FANS implementation • Ground systems • Only developed countries are investing in this technology. • Low level of knowledge among high CAA´s management staff. Was it so difficult to introduce HF voice communication many years from now as it is now with FANS? Are the benefits not clear enough? Over fly fees are higher in FANS Airspace? Next

  19. FANS implementation • Airborne systems • For brand new long haul aircraft it is still an option. • Only major airlines are retrofitting their existing airplanes. • Low level of knowledge among high Airlines management staff. It is still to expensive to retrofit existing airplanes! Are the benefits not clear enough? Next

  20. FANS implementation CAA´s, Airlines, Avionic vendors, Datalink service providers, they all get benefits from FANS. May an extra effort be made it? From our pilot's point of view we think yes..!! Next

  21. AOC AUTOMATIC WPT REPORTING RELAYED TO ATC AOC AUTOMATIC WPT REPORTING AND FANS A NZ airspace CHILE airspace 11:50 /12 hours 30/40 min. 30 min. VHF COMM DATALINK COMM VHF COMM LAN801 typical datalink profile SCL / AKL 13:00 hours flight No HF comm. Except for radio check when transferred.

  22. WELL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH I THINK MORE IN DEEP DESCRIPTION IS NOT NEEDED AS YOU ARE EXPERTS AND IT IS LUNCH TIME FOR ME BYE BYE Last One

  23. GIVE FANS (FUTURE) THE CHANCE TO BECOME AN OLD AND WISE PAST Credits
