In the middle of Frysztak we can finda square of Saint Florian. This square got such a name after Saint Florian. Saint Florian is the patron of firemen. This memorial was built in 1901, after a horrible fire in Frysztak. It happened in 1890. Frysztak’s monuments-Saint Florian’s statue. • Frysztak’s chronicler Józef Piętniewicz described this event in these words: ”… On Sunday 4th May, at about 9 o’clock the fire started to spread, many buildings caught fire(…) even 2 houses behind the city were destroyed(…) 46 houses were burned.”
Saint Florian was a Roman soldier, born in 250. He served in the provinceof Noricum. He helped Christians when the emperor of Rome sent an edict, in which he ordered to haunt all Christians. For that reason saint Florian was arrested and tortured. He died in 304 in the river Enns. He was drowned. For that he is the patron of firemen and every profession which in connected with fire. The project about… Church in Frysztak
Our church Beautiful hills, extensive valleys, spectacular forests, winding brooks... This is our village with one of the oldest buildings in this region - the church. Our church was built in 1927 by priest Wojciech Blajer. In our church there is the beautiful antique altar and stone-sculptures presenting Saint Mark and Saint John. On the ceiling there are beautiful paintings showing angels. People built this temple on a very big hill. DuringGerman occupation in the course of Worl War II our chuch was damaged. The roof was hit by around 80 missiles. After the war people restored the temple. In our parish there are 5000 worshippers. This church for us - Catholics - is very important. We can pray there every day. On weekdays there are two masses. Every Sunday there are five big masses.
Jewish cemeteries in Frysztak In 17th century Jews arrived in our village. First, they lived in the suburbs but then settled in all area of the town. Jews dealt in trade and they were also craftsmen. In 1939 World War II went out. There were a lot of casualties. 70% of people including 50% of Jews lost their lives. Jews who survived escaped from our town. Because of heavy casualties a lot of cemeteries were built. In Frysztak there are 4 Jewish cemeteries. In Frysztak and in Glinik Dolny and Twierdza, nowadays they are in a bad condition but our administration officials are going to renovate them. We are conscious that Jewish minority is an important part of our history. This photo was taken between World War I and World War II.
