  2. SAMUEL SLATER • Born in Derbyshire, England 1768 • Father of the American Factory System • Apprenticed at a cotton mill • Emigrated to US looking for opportunity • Covertly shared British textile secrets with the Americans • Built America’s first water-powered cotton spinning mill

EVENTS • 1789: Slater emigrates to United States • 1789: Shares British information with US textile factories • 1790: Builds first water-powered cotton spinning mill, which spun cotton into thread, in Rhode Island • 1791: Mill now run by a waterwheel • 1803: Slatersville, Rhode Island • 1835: Death of Samuel Slater
