  3. Objectives of Presentation • To draw attention to some aspects of USAID/ GHARP Public/ Private Partnership Program • To give an overview of the Guyana Private Sector Advisory Board and its transition to the Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA)

Enabling factors • Demonstrated involvement in social issues • Political will and support of both the government and donor community - Universal Access to ARV • Support of parent organizations overseas • As part of corporate responsibility • Some were directly affected and wanted a way to contribute to the national response • Previous sensitization on the magnitude of the issue

ENABLING FACTORS • In Guyana HIV/AIDS has its greatest effect among persons 15-49 years old, the productive life of a person mainly in the workplace • As the engine of growth for most nations the Caribbean private sector is currently targeted as a resource for supplementing and promoting HIV/AIDS initiatives in the region. Employees estimated at over 5.5 million

Public/ Private ApproachFrom April 2005 USAID/GHARP developed a strategy aimed at: • Linking private sector employees and their families to products, programs and services, such as VCT, PMTCT, HBC, etc • Utilizing the core competencies of different PS partners - Organization & Management; Employees & Families; Their supply chain and Community influence • Establishing a Private Sector Advisory Board comprising CEOs and HR Managers of PS Partners

Initial Public/Private Sector HIV Response • 18 Entities Signed Memorandum of Cooperation– now 43 with 12 others on the horizon • Private sector agencies, Semi-autonomous agencies and Associations/ Chambers of commerce, organized Labor • Sensitization and awareness sessions held with management and employees; BCC introduced; Stigma & Discrimination discouraged • VCT accessed by employees

Private Sector Advisory Board on HIV/ AIDS Established in May 2006 - The goals • Establish and build a sustainable coalition of private sector organizations working to help reduce and prevent HIV/AIDS • Provide private sector partners an opportunity to share best practices in HIV/AIDS • Provide opportunity to link with and learn from other regional and global organizations. • Establish an Annual Awards Program (first held in 2007)

  9. Achievements • Over 10% of national workforce will access HIV workplace training under the signed Memorandum Of Cooperation. In excess of 30,000 persons reached directly and over 120,000 indirectly via this program • 26 HIV/AIDS workplace policies (ILO guidelines) have been signed and operationalized • Focal persons and peer educators trained to manage their programs

Achievements • The Private Sector has contributed over US$230,000 in contributions and in-kind support to help sponsor: • Stigma and discrimination awareness events, including the largest HIV/AIDS S&D event in the Caribbean, attracting regional talent such as Rupee & Ricki Jai • Annual Phillip Vanderhyden Walkathon • National day of testing • Other media and public awareness events

Achievements -Raised USD 50,000 and other material support to Orphan and Vulnerable Children • Assist PLHAs to access micro credit loans - 92 disbursements to date • Provide skills training to PLHA in Jewelry making, craft, sewing; also trained as tour guides • Provided opportunity to acquire house lots by lottery process and training in construction

Achievements • Supported care and treatment to PLHA and TB by sponsoring monthly visits of a physician-led medical team • Facilitated on-site counseling and testing - Accessed at worksites by over 5000 employees • Sponsored media programs highlighting some of these achievements • Employment of persons affected and infected

Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA) • MISSION: “to mobilize and assist the private sector in their response to HIV/AIDS in the workplace and beyond by facilitating technical assistance as well as helping organizations identify and apply their core competencies, products, services, and resources to assist in the response to HIV/AIDS.” • Formally launched on May 30, 2008 and officiated by Hon Dr. L Ramsammy, Guyana’s Minister of Health and current Chairman of the World Health Assembly. The US Embassy, The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, TB & Malaria (GBC), GHARP Partner organizations and the Guyana Coalition Board Members were also represented • Have established strong links to the GBC, CAIC, PANCAP, Pan Caribbean Business Coalition. GBC co branded the Coalition Launch

Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA) KEY OBJECTIVES Coordinate and help enhance the portfolio of services Link companies to services Encourage members to go beyond the workplace to engage in community and nation level activities. Grow membership including SMEs & promote active participation of all members. Help fill in the existing needs/gaps to support sustainability

Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA) KEY OBJECTIVES Strengthen the exchange and coordination between the private sector and the public sector in Guyana, as well as other regional and international business coalitions concerning HIV/AIDS workplace and private sector activities. Serve as a forum that will engage all key stakeholders in private sector and workplace issues in Guyana, including the International Labour Organisations, Ministries of Health & Labour.

World Health Assembly President and Guyana’s Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy and Ms Amanda St Aubyn, Chairperson of the Coalition flanked by key officials who officiated at the Launching Ceremony GBCHA on May 30, 2008. The Event was Co-Branded by the Global Business Coalition on HIV/ AIDS, TB, and Malaria (GBC)

Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA) • Hosted 2nd Annual HIV Awards for Business Excellence and Dinner on May 29, 2008 - Keynote speaker Sir George Alleyne, UN Secretary General Special Envoy on HIV/ AIDS in the Caribbean - Chairperson of the Pan Caribbean Business Coalition against HIV/ AIDS, Ms Carol Ayoung also participated on the Awards Program - Other dignitaries who participated included- Guyana’s Prime Minister; Minister of Health and other Government Ministers; members of the Diplomatic Corps; Private sector and Civil Society leaders, the Coalition Board and Membership and GHARP partners and partner NGO’s

Mr. Kwame Asiedu, GHARP Chief of Party & Ms Sylvia Delafield, HDI Director and GHARP Private Sector Advisor highlighting the achievements of the Private Sector Partnership Program at the 2008 Awards for Business Excellence. • The GBCHA presented Awards for Business Excellence in six categories of HIV responses by Private Sector Partners

  19. Sir George Alleyne, United Nations Special Envoy on HIV/ AIDS in the Caribbean was the keynote speaker at the ceremony. He lauded Guyana’s progress in HIV/ AIDS response and noted “such outstanding examples of good corporate citizenship…. .”. 3rd from Sir George’s right is Guyana’s Prime Minister, Hon Samuel Hinds

Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA) • Currently establishing a Secretariat - Office space donated by Georgetown Municipality (a PS Partner); - members contributing to startup • Membership Services Officer appointed; also being supported by USAID/GHARP • First two year Business Plan developed

Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA) IN CONCLUSION GBCHA is committed to collaborating with Regional Caribbean and Latin American Business Coalitions as well as prestigious agencies, such as CONAES in implementing a coordinated Public/Private Sector response to HIV. The GBCHA is also dedicated to strengthening their formal ties with the Global Business Coalition on HIV/ AIDS, TB, and Malaria (GBC) to formulate an effective response to the call from the Caribbean Heads of Government for the private sector to address the issue of Chronic Diseases
