Chlamydia • Chlamydia can be transferred from one person to another by vaginal, anal, or oral sex. • The signs and symptoms for women who have this std might have an abnormal vaginal discharge or a burning sensation when urinating is lower abdominal pain, low back pain, nausea, fever, pain during intercourse, or bleeding between menstrual periods. Men with signs or symptoms might have a discharge from their penis or a burning sensation when urinating. Men might also have burning and itching around the opening of the penis. • Short term effects from Chlamydia for men is the penis normally swells when in contact by water. Long term effects for men and women is you may become infertile and after a while of having this infection it could turn into PID (Pelvic inflammatory disease). • To prevent yourself from getting this infection you could abstain from sex, be faithful, use condoms, and get tested annually. • The treatment for Chlamydia is antibiotics. Either you take one single dose of antibiotics or you take it daily.
Gonorrhea • Gonorrhea is transmitted through contact with vagina, penis, mouth, or anus. Ejaculation does not have to occur for the disease to be spread. • Signs and symptoms for women are bleeding associated with vaginal intercourse, painful or burning sensations when urinating, yellow or bloody vaginal discharge, cramps and pain, bleeding between menstrual periods, vomiting, fever. Symptoms in men are White, yellow, or green pus from the penis with pain, burning sensations during urination that may be severe, and swollen testicles. • The short term effects of gonorrhea is that it will cause inflammation in the cervix for women. If left untreated, gonorrhea may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease. It can also cause arthritis. • To prevent yourself from getting this infection you could not have sex, be faithful, use condoms, understand birth control, talk to your partner and doctor, have regular pelvic exams, and get tested. • To treat this infection you will either need a single dose of antibiotic injected in you or in pill form.
Hepatitis • Hepatitis B is transmitted through contaminated blood, sweat, tears, saliva, semen, saliva, vaginal secretions, menstrual blood and breast milk. Hepatitis A is spread through any contact with fecal matter that is infected already. Hepatitis C is usually transferred through sharing anything which has come in contact with the blood of a person that is infected. • The signs and symptoms for having Hepatitis are fever, a generally tired or ill feeling, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and muscle aches. • The short term effects of Hepatitis are being ill or feeling sick. The long term effects are liver damage which could lead to liver disease. • To prevent yourself from getting this std is you could use a condom, not have sex, only have one partner and get checked regularly. • There is a few ways to treat Hepatitis but not ever type can be cured. You could get a shot or take a pill.
Herpes • Herpes is spread through direct skin contact. If a person has a sore and has sexual intercourse, oral sex, or anal sex the infection will be spread. • Sings and symptoms for men and women are small red bumps, blisters (vesicles) or open sores (ulcers) in the genital, anal or nearby areas, pain or itching around your genital area, butt or inner thighs. • The short term effects may lead to drowsiness, irregular periods and heavy vaginal discharge. Short term effects for the male may lead to irregular bleeding from the penis if untreated and growth of cists in the testicles. There is no long term effects if the infection is treated other than scarring from the sores. • To prevent yourself from getting this infection you could not have sex, use a condom, or stick with one partner. • There is no treatment for Herpes but once the outbreak occurs you could use ointments to speed up the healing process.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus • This virus is transmitted by breastfeeding, sexual contact, sharing needles or getting the blood of someone that is infected into your system. • The signs and symptoms of this virus are fever, weight loss, headache, rash, sores in mouth & esophagus, vomiting, and nausea. • There isn’t many short term effects of this virus because it doesn’t go away. The long term effects are you immune system getting weaker, and it leads to AIDS. • To prevent yourself from getting this virus you could not have sex, stick with one partner, use a condom, and make sure any blood or bodily fluid from someone infected doesn’t get in your system. • You cannot treat this virus and cure it or get rid of it but you could take medication to slow down the virus.
Pubic Lice • Pubic lice is transferred by sexual contact or using towels, sheets, or clothes from someone who has pubic lice. • The signs and symptoms of pubic lice is pubic itching, pubic nits, red marks in pubic areas, hives in pubic areas, black specks on underwear, itching areas of hair, itching scalp, red marks in hairy areas, visible lice in hair. • The short term effects from having pubic lice is having itching in areas with the lice. There is no long term effects once the lice are treated. • To prevent yourself from getting pubic lice make sure your partner is tested, stick to one partner, do not share clothes or towels with people who have pubic lice and avoid sexual contact. • To treat pubic lice there is many different options of lotions, creams, ointments, and shampoos to use.
Syphilis • This std can be transmitted through direct contact with a syphilis sore. It is transmitted through anal, oral or vaginal sex. • The signs and symptoms of Syphilis is a chancre sore, skin rash with brown sores about the size of a penny, mild fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, as well as patchy hair loss, and swollen lymph glands throughout the body. • The short term effects of this std are a red/brown rash about the size of a penny that may be on all of your body or just certain parts like the palms of your hands or the bottoms of your feet. This is the most common early symptom. Also headache, mild fatigue, hair loss, and swollen lymph nodes may occur. Long term effects include serious heart abnormalities, mental disorders, blindness, other neurological symptoms, and sometimes even death. • To prevent yourself from getting this std you could abstain from sex, talk to your partner, stick with one partner, avoid any sexual contact, and use a condom. • Syphilis is treated with a dose of antibiotic injected into the person that is infected.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease • The symptoms and signs of this disease are back pain, abdominal pain, pain during sexual intercourse, unusual vaginal discharge, or painful urination. • The transmission of this disease is through Gonorrhea or Chlamydia when it is left untreated. • The short term effects of this disease are back pain, abdominal pain, pain during sexual intercourse, unusual vaginal discharge, or painful urination. The long term effects are PID can permanently scar and damage the fallopian tubes, causing blockage of the tubes. • To prevent yourself from getting this disease you could abstain from sex, have only one partner, use a condom, make sure your partner has no stds, and get tested. • Treatment for this disease is your health care provider will start antibiotic therapy for PID as soon as the diagnosis is made. Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are suspected and treated in every person. Pain medication and IV fluids will be given if you need them
Human Papilloma Virus • This std is transmitted through having sexual contact including oral, anal or vaginal sex. • The signs and symptoms of this std are small, hard spots, easily visible to the eye, develop within 3 weeks to 3 months after exposure. In women, the warts occur on the lips of the vagina, inside the vagina, or around the anus. The warts also may be itchy. • The short term effects of this virus is having warts in genital areas. The long term effects is it might turn into cancer if left untreated. • To prevent genital warts you should get tested, get a shot to help prevent it, use a condom, stick with one partner, and make sure your partners been tested. • The treatment of this std is you could have the warts frozen off or burned off, surgery, or a chemical treatment.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease • This std is transmitted through having bacteria enter a woman’s reproductive system. • The signs and symptoms of this disease are irregular menstrual cycles, vaginal discharge, and abdominal pain. Other than that there might not be any symptoms. • The effects from this disease are scarring in reproductive organs, chronic pain, or not being able to get pregnant. • To prevent this disease you should not have sex, use a condom, stick to one partner, get checked annually, and don’t douche. • To treat this disease you can take antibiotics or surgery might be needed.
