Cellular Energy Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst! • Catalyst: • What is energy? • What does the mitochondria do? • Which cell organelle helps plants use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide into sugar? • WEEKLY GOAL! In complete sentences. Needs to be measurable.
Agenda • Be all that you can be. • Is it worth it? Let me work it – Using ATP! • Photosynthesis • BRAIN GAIN • EQ
As your teacher, it is my responsibility… • To provide you with the best education possible • Give you the opportunity to achieve success • Challenge you to make sure you are reaching your full potential • Ensure you are a competitive candidate • And that you have multiple life choices 2: 63.8 3: 63.7 4: 56.9
All students are SMART • Sit Up • Make eye contact • Answer questions and participate • Respect yourself and others • Try your hardest Take notes. Stay focused. Do all the work.

Objectives By the end of today, SWBAT… • Explain how energy from the sun becomes ATP • Explain how the cell uses ATP
Cellular Energy • Key Point #1: Cells need energy in the form of ATP to do work • If energy is not in the form of ATP, then it must be changed into ATP before a cell can use it • ATP is the form of energy that lets cells do what they want • Cells need ATP to grow • Muscle cells need ATP to contract • Brain cells need ATP to think • Etc.
How ATP Works • ATP = adenosine triphosphate • The energy of ATP is stored in the bonds of the phosphate molecules • Chemical energy = energy stored in chemical bonds • How do cells use ATP? • Energy stored in bonds • Break off the last phosphate, and energy is released
Try out some questions. ATP section Complete sentences 7 minutes Work hard. Get smart. Be successful. We have our info…
Chemical Reactions Key Point #1: Chemical reactions REARRANGE reactants into products. Reactants = Materials you START with in a chemical reaction. Products = Materials you FINISH with in a chemical reaction. Photosynthesis is a specific chemical reaction that, using energy from the sun, rearranges its reactants into its products. PHOTOSYNTHESIS is a CHEMICAL REACTION
Photosynthesis Key Point #2: Photosynthesis converts solar energy from the Sun into chemical energy in glucose. Glucose = a type of sugar Happens in the chloroplasts Plant cells only Add this in!
The Equation What do plants need to grow? Water, carbon dioxide, sunlight What is made by photosynthesis? Glucose
The Equation Key Point #3: The reactants of photosynthesis are carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight. The products are glucose and oxygen. Carbon dioxide = CO2 Water = H2O Glucose = C6H12O6 Oxygen = O2
Unbalanced CO2 + H2O + sun C6H12O6 + O2
BALANCED! 6CO2 + 6H2O + sun C6H12O6 + 6O2 REACTANTS PRODUCTS
Practice Why do cells need energy?
Practice Cells use energy in the form of ______.
Practice What type of energy does ATP have?
