Introduction • LaTeX is a document typesetting system for high-quality manuscripts. It is most often used for medium-to-large technical or scientific documents (theses, books, technical reports etc.) but it can be used for almost any form of publishing. • LaTeX is not a word processor! Instead, LaTeX encourages authors not to worry too much about the appearance of their documents but to concentrate on getting the right content.
History • Late 1970s -> 1989: TeX by Don Knuth • Decent typesetting by the authors! • Same output now as in the future • Low level, but powerful • Frozen development • Starting early 1980s: LaTeX by Leslie Lamport • High level language (macros, really) for TeX • Easy to use! • Current version is Latex2e
What is LaTeX • How to pronounce LaTeX? (Lah-tek, or Lay-tek) • A typesetting program, not a word-processor • Macros of TeX (Donald E. Knuth) • Current version LaTeX2 • Designed for producing beautiful books, theses, papers, articles... • Standard for writing academic papers
LaTeX Vs. Word • Professional result • Cross Platform, version independent • Pre-set standard formats (for paper, thesis…) • Automated Bibliography management • Fast, professional math equations typesetting • Free available • Automated Indices and counters • Never crash, never lose your file • Can compile very big books (unless your document is more than 70,000 pages!)
Disadvantages • You need other software for pictures • Spelling/grammar checking is not as convenient as those in MS Word • Not a WYSIWYG (truetype) • Remember some commands • Not straightforward for creating complex tables • Not integrated with other MS Office products
