What is preventive maintenance? • Preventive maintenance is a regular and systematic inspection, cleaning, and replacement of worn parts, materials, and systems. • Preventive maintenance helps to prevent failure of parts, materials, and systems by ensuring that they are in good working order. • A good preventive maintenance program helps minimize failures.

  3. 2 types of preventive maintenance • Software • Anything dealing with the programs of a computer • Hardware • Anything dealing with the physical parts of a computer

  4. Software maintenance • Verify that installed software is current. • Follow the policies of the organization when installing security updates, operating system updates, and program updates. • Review software updates • Review security updates • Defragment

  5. Other types of software maintenance • Use virus and spyware checking software • AdAware & SpyBot Search & Destroy • Norton Antivirus & McAfee • Update drivers • Drivers - a device driver or software driver allows higher-level computer programs to interact with a hardware device • For example: A driver might allow your graphics program to access your scanner.

  6. Hardware maintenance • Check the condition of cables, components, and peripherals. • Clean components in order to reduce the likelihood of overheating. • Repair or replace any components that show signs of abuse or excess wear.

  7. Other types of hardware maintenance • Use canned air (or an air compressor) to blow the dust out of machines. This will keep it from overheating. • Clean the monitor using isopropyl alcohol. • Make sure you have working power strips, surge protectors, etc.
