Content • Storyline • People in the case • What we did • Solving the crime • Evidence • Verdict • Our selection
Storyline • A man has been found killed in a classroom • He had gone to a party just before he was killed • Mysterious code found in his pocket • Other clues • TIME TO FIND THE MURDERER AND BRING HIM TO JUSTICE!
What we did in the sabbats • Had to carry out many different tests to help us uncover the truth to what happened. • Had to do quite a lot of different experiments, and match things such as handwriting • Cracked codes • Questioning sessions • Discussion time
Solving the crime • Most difficult task: Questioning • Had to ask our questions in the right way, to the right person • Had to craft our questions really carefully
Solving the crime • Easiest task: Understanding the crime scene • Had a very clear mind once the questions were answered • Could link all the things together after Mr Bill answered our questions
Solving the crime • Media: they had to make up a story since the reporter couldn’t go near the crime scene • She had to make up some story, and interview a random man, who had nothing to do with the crime. • Was not so helpful to us
Evidence • Fingerprinting • Needed 8 matches of fingerprints for it to be accepted as evidence • Possibility of human error resulting in accusing of wrong person
Evidence • Lip print • A classification for lip print might be: • By the curve at the edge of the lip • By the curve at the top and bottom of the lip • By the gap between the upper lip and the lower lip
Evidence • “Knowing” and “Proving” • Proving is establishing the truth of evidence • Knowing is perceiving or understanding something as fact or truth • Difference between the two: If you KNOW that someone committed a crime, you might not be able to PROVE to someone else that it was he who did it
Verdict • Had not been able to pay on time. • Peter Hamilton is angry as even though John owed other people money, he still went for parties and had fun. • Hamilton called sidekick Jack Smith to teach John a lesson.
Verdict • Could not pay the money • In the fight, John picked up a glass piece from the scattered broken window glass and attacked Jack • Was pushed to the wall • Jack’s blood smeared on the wall • Jack drew his pistol and shot John.
Verdict • Suspects should receive capital punishment. Murdered John Lee who was unarmed. • Robert Isles should be arrested. • Was on drugs and invited people to his house. Should be jailed, longer than any of the other people at the party who also took drugs.
Verdict • We would judge that the suspects are guilty • Sentence them to death because they murdered an unarmed man who could not defend himself • Should not kill just because of money
Reflections • Questioning session taught us to look deeper into things • Asked question on the surface on the 1st and 2nd day • Only looked deeper on the 3rd day, and asked more indebt questions that helped us • Felt that this program has certainly helped us in becoming more critical thinkers
Conclusion • Feel that this camp is really enriching • Learnt that many of the forensic acts screened on the television are not totally true • Forensic science is not as easy as what we had thought
