The two different trophies • There has been 2 different trophies awarded to the winners. • The first one was named after the founder of the World Cup, Jules Rimet. • The second, the current trophy, is called the FIFA World Cup Trophy. • The Jules Rimet trophy was awarded to Brazil to keep in 1970 because they won it 3 times.
Jules Rimet • Jules Rimet was the 3rd president of FIFA. • Jules Rimet was born in 1873 in eastern France. • Rimet died at Suresnes in France in 1956, two days after his 83rd birthday. • He was also the head of the French Football Federation.
1st Trophy theft • In 1966 before the World Cup in England the Trophy was stolen. • The trophy was put on exhibition in Westminster Hall and the next day it was stolen. • The man who stole it demanded a ransom of £15,000. • The FA went to give him the money but he ran off and was caught. • It turned out he was a petty thief who was paid to rob it.
Pickles • Pickles is known for finding the Jules Rimet Trophy. • He found the Trophy in a package under a bush when walking with his owner. • He was a mixed border collie. • Pickles died in 1967 when he choked on his leash while chasing a cat.
2nd Trophy theft • In 1983 it was stolen again from the Brazilian FA ‘s headquarters. • Brazil had got it to keep 13 years earlier because they had won it 3 times 1958, 1962 and 1970. • It is believed that it was melted down for money after. • The trophy was believed to be stolen by three thieves.
