Video Recording & Editing of Class Sessions and Uploading to Blackboard
Recording of Class Sessions • Contact Media Services at (212)636-6313 (LC) or (718)817-2289 (RH) to schedule the set up of a digital video camera and a tripod in the classroom you will be teaching in. It is advisable to also request that they set up a remote control mouse on the podium computer so that you can move around the room freely. Make sure to request from the media services to burn the ‘raw video files’ into a DVD for you. • As you teach your class, make sure you are staying within the viewing angle of the camera. Check the viewing angle on the camera before you start teaching. • Typically, the day after the class session you can pick up the DVD that contains the raw video files for your class session. The Media Services offices are located on the 4th floor of Lowenstein and the basement of Keating Hall.
Hardware and Software Needed • Hardware: • PC computer with 10GB of free hard drive • An external hard drive to store your video files • Software for editing the video: • Pinnacle Studio: This software does advanced editing and file compression. Please contact estelami@fordham.edu if you need a copy. • MicroSoft Movie Maker (free) in combination with Sorenson (to create a ‘compressed’ file). If you choose to use this software setup, please contact the Faculty Technology Center (ftc@fordham.edu; 212-636-7788 to request copies and training)
The Process • Step 1: You will transfer the video files from the DVD given to you by Media Services, onto your hard drive • Step 2: You will edit the video using Pinnacle. • Step 3: You will submit your edits in Pinnacle to make a movie in .mp4 format. The .mp4 format is the ‘compressed’ file format which allows the video to become compact enough for transmission through the Internet so that the students can watch your video easily without long download times. • Step 4: You will upload your video file (now in .mp4 format) onto the Course Documents section of the Blackboard page for your course so that the students can download it from there.
