Direct vs. Indirect Characterization Direct characterization is used to reveal information about a character in an obvious way. Example: Josh was an athletic man who enjoyed playing hockey. Indirect characterization is used to reveal information about a character but in an implied way. Example: Josh wrapped and rewrapped his hockey stick every night. The reader can infer that the character enjoys playing hockey and wants everything to be perfect.
