1 Timothy 2:9-14 (NKJV) 9 in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 11 Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.
1 Timothy 2:9-14 (NKJV) 12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.
Defending The Faith • These lesson topics are chosen because they are issues that we must be aware of • They are issues of prevalence in our world today and in the religious world • We must know the truth, practice the truth and be able to defend the truth of God’s word
Defending The Faith • We have looked at the Existence of God, the Bible as the Word of God, Salvation and the Church as well as Worship • Tied into the worship and service of the church is a topic that many recently have changed their views on • This doesn’t mean that the Bible has changed
Defending The Faith • This morning we want to take a biblical look at the role of women, specifically in the worship and work of the church • We want to see what the Bible says about this topic • There are 2 things we should remember as we delve in this morning
Defending The Faith • We must never be guided simply by our emotions or feelings or even just our opinions • Within the church, we all have roles to fill (1 Cor. 12); no one’s role is less important than others • This is not a discussion about who is superior to whom
1 Timothy 2:11-14 • When reading a book of the Bible, there is usually some theme • The theme for 1 Timothy is found in 3:15 • “but in case I am delayed, I write so that you will know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth”
1 Timothy 2:11-14 • Paul was writing Timothy so that he would know the proper conduct in the church • Paul said that a woman was not permitted to teach or have authority over a man • That’s why we see the qualifications for elders & deacons limited to men (3:1-13)
1 Timothy 2:11-14 • Why would Paul say this? • Did Paul have some bias against women? • “For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve” (v. 13) • “And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression” (v. 14)
1 Timothy 2:11-14 • Notice Paul’s reasoning is not cultural • Rather Paul points back to the way things were ordered by God going back to the beginning (Gen. 2 & 3) • That same order is not just found in the church, but also in the home (Eph. 5:22-33)
1 Corinthians 14:33-40 • There is another instance where Paul spoke of women in the worship as well • Notice both in verse 33 and in verse 40 that Paul says God wants peace and order • We also see in verse 33 that this is to be in “all the churches of the saints”
1 Corinthians 14:33-40 • God has always been a God of order • Paul once again lays out God’s will plainly in this passage • He even notes in verse 37 that “the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord”
1 Corinthians 14:33-40 • Does any of this sound “cultural”? • Remember that God was seeking peace and order not just in Corinth but in every church • Paul earlier sighted a very similar reasoning in 11:3…
1 Corinthians 14:33-40 • “But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ” • There has always been order • None of these things have anything to do with culture, but everything to do with God
Role of Women • I hate that we often have to focus on what women are not to do • There is so much that our women do for the Lord that is so important and so valuable • My life has been shaped by some very godly women as well as men
Role of Women • The idea of submission should not be a negative term to any of us • We all have the duty not only to submit to God but to submit to one another as well • Culture should never dictate what we do in the Lord’s church
