3.4.5 Energy Transfers L.O: explain why energy transfer is not efficient in natural ecosystems to describe how productivity can be increased in managed ecosystems Starter: • State the type of organism always found at the beginning of a food chain • Use the pictures below to think why this organism cannot capture all the energy from the sun… A B C
Net Primary Productivity (NPP) … is the energy fixed by plants minus respiratory loss. In general: Net Productivity = + NPP determines the amount of energy available to the next trophic level (and the whole food chain!) http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/add_aqa_pre_2011/foodchains/foodchains2.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/energy-transfers-and-food-chains-pt-2-2/199.html
Calculating and Explaining Energy ‘Loss’ in Ecosystems Aim: to visually demonstrate energy ‘loss’ in a food chain • Resources • (all must be used!): • Beaker of dyed water • Plastic cups • Measuring cylinder • Pipette • Coloured paper • Information sheet • Optional: AQA textbook Challenge! Are you up for a challenge? Use a tennis ball somewhere in your visualisation! Read the information sheet (and textbook if you wish) Plan what you are going to do with the resources (discuss and sketch) How will you record your visualisation? (notes, picture, mobile phone?) Prepare your visualisation Extension: 1) What do you think the units for this might be? (think energy per area per year) 2) What other factors could affect NPP?
So How Can You Minimise This and Maximise Productivity? Maximising Productivity
