  2. General Information • Born on November 29th, 1898 in Belfast, Ireland • Died on November 22th, 1963 in Oxford, England, the same day as John F. Kennedy and author Aldous Huxley • Was called Jack by his friends and family his whole life • Wrote about 40 books in total • Full name was Clive Staples Lewis • Known for writing Science Fiction, Christian Apologetics, and Children’s Literature.

Early Life • His mom died of cancer when Lewis was only 10 years old • At the age of 15, Lewis abandoned his childhood Christian Faith, became an atheist, and a developed an interest in the Occult. • Was awarded a scholarship in 1916 to Oxford University • Graduated from Oxford with a First (The British equivalent to a masters degree) in Honor Moderations (Greek and Latin Literature), in Greats (Philosophy and Ancient History), and a First in English.

  4. Conversion to Christianity • Lewis began to be influenced back towards Christianity by his arguments with his fellow colleague and friend J.R.R. Tolkien • Lewis was also influenced by the book The Everlasting Man written by G.K. Charleston • Lewis converted back to Christianity after a late night walk with Tolkien and Hugo Dyson • Lewis was a devoted Anglican • Lewis is commemorated on the 22nd of November in the church calendar of the Episcopal Church

Career • Lewis taught as a Fellow of Magdalene College in Oxford for almost 30 years from 1925-1954 • He was the first Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English at the University of Cambridge • His scholarly works were predominantly about the later Middle Ages, specifically its use of allegory • Lewis also wrote numerous prefaces to older works of Literature and Poetry • His last academic work was The Discarded Image: An introduction to Medieval and Renaissance Literature which was basically a summary of the medieval world view

  7. Literary Criticism • The Discarded Image • The last book written by C.S. Lewis • It is about the configuration of the medieval universe, the nature of its inhabitants, the concept of a finite universe, ordered and maintained by a celestial hierarchy, and the ideas of nature. • The Allegory of Love • This book is about how love was characterized in Literature during the Middle Ages

Science Fiction • Space Trilogy • Out of the Silent Planet • Set, for the most part, on Mars • The idea of Space and other planets in this book are based off of medieval cosmology • Parallel to Christian teachings in that there are characters representing Jesus, God, Angels, and Lucifer • Main character in all three books is Elwin Ransom • Perelandra • Set mostly on Venus • Emphasizes the value of hierarchy and the dullness of Satan • That Hideous Strength • Set on Earth • Parallels similar to Christian beliefs

Chronicles of Narnia Series • The series used similar characters and ideas from Greek and Roman Mythology, but is primarily made up of Christian themes • The Series includes 7 books: The Magician's Nephew;The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Horses Boy, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, and The Last Battle • Lewis was adamant that the books were not allegory, but more of a fictional parallel universe

Theology • Mere Christianity • Created from a series of BBC radio talks from 1941-1944 • Explains the basics of Christianity that all denominations of Christianity share • Made up of three books that were combined to have all the talks in one book • The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality • The Screwtape Letters • A series of letters from a Senior Demon. Screwtape, written to his nephew, a junior tempter named Wormwood • His was writing to his nephew to tell him how to undermine the Patients faith, and he told his nephew to promote sin in the Patient in order to turn the Patient towards “Our Father Below”(Satan/The Devil) • The Patient represents a regular man who is fighting temptations, but at the end you figure out that when he died he went to Heaven.
