  2. Introduction • Students are required to write an essay in order to pass the GED. Today we will learn the following parts of the essay question. 1. Background information 2. Main topic 3. Instructions • Level 7—Mr. Johnson—Cummins Unit

  4. BACKGROUND INFORMATION • Background information gives you ideas about possible opinions you might talk about in your essay. Use the background information to give you ideas about the topic. • Breakout the background information from the topic and the instructions.

  5. TOPIC The topic is the subject of your essay The topic requires your opinion about the subject. The topic does not require any specialized information, but your opinion about the subject. All of the ideas in your essay should relate to the topic.

  6. INSTRUCTIONS • Instructions explain what you are to do with your essay. • Instructions clearly state the kind of information required. • Instructions ask you to agree or disagree and/or give specific examples to back up your opinion.

  7. EXAMPLES • (#1) Recently several states have passed laws requiring the driver and passengers in a motor vehicle to wear seat belts while the vehicle is in operation. Many people believe that these laws infringe on personal freedom. Others believe that these laws are necessary to save lives. • #1. Background information on the topic Use the background information to give you ideas about the topic.

  9. Figuring Out the Topic Mandatory drug testing in the work place has been the cause for heated debate. Many people feel that testing employees is an invasion of privacy. Others see it as a way of protecting themselves and their employees. In a composition of one two pages, describe the effects of mandatory drug testing on employees. You may wish to describe the positive effects, the negative effects, or both. Use specific examples to support your opinion. (STATE THE TOPIC ABOVE)
