15.2 Energy Conversion and Conservation Can Energy Be Converted From One Form Into Another? What Is the Law of Conservation of Energy? What Energy Conversion Takes Place As an Object Falls Toward Earth? How Are Energy and Mass Related?
Energy Conversion • Energy Conversion = is the changing one form of energy to another form • Ex. Light bulb turns Electrical Energy into thermal energy and electromagnetic energy
Conservation of Energy • Law of Conservation of Energy = Energy cannot be created or destroyed. • Energy is converted from one form to another. • The force of friction causes energy to be converted to thermal energy.
Energy Conversions • Most common energy conversion is between potential energy and kinetic energy. • For ex - Gravitational Potential Energy of an object is converted to the kinetic energy of motion as an object falls.
Energy Conversions • Pendulum– High point (PE)—Swing (KE)—High point (PE). • Pole Vault— Run (KE)—Pole bends (EPE)—Top of bar (GPE)—Fall down (KE).
Pendulum Energy • Between the two Points B & D are where Kinetic Energy • Points A &E are total Potential Energy
Energy Conversion Calculation • Mechanical Energy is total kinetic energy and potential energy of an object– Formula: • Mechanical Energy = KE + PE • Mechanical Process is any type of motion
Energy Conversion Calculation • Mechanical energy at start = energy at end • Conservation of Mechanical Energy = • (KE + PE)beginning = (KE + PE)end
Energy and Mass • Einstein’s Equation. • E = mc2. • E = energy; m = mass; c = speed of light. Fusion &Fission
Energy and Mass • Energy and mass are equivalent and can be converted into each other. • Energy is released as matter is destroyed and matter can be created from energy. Fusion &Fission
Energy Conversion Drawings!! • Draw a series of pictures tracing the energy flow needed to power your TV set. • Draw a series of pictures tracing the energy flow needed to heat a pot of water on a campfire • Draw a series of pictures tracing the energy needed to allow you to run/walk/play
