www.valenj.org The current VALE Website (www.valenj.org) was developed 4-5 years ago with the purpose of sharing information among member libraries. The website has served the organization well, however, there are a number of problems with the site. This poster presents the results of a recent VALE website usability survey, conducted as part of the process of developing a new, Content Management System-based website, powered by Drupal, that will better serve the VALE member libraries. Each member library was asked to contact their staff for feedback regarding the current VALE site: What do you think is missing on the site and what should be added to the new VALE portal? What features would you like to remove from the site? What kind of layout would be more functional to the VALE community? Example of A Drupal Website The VALE Website Committee is in the process of planning and building a new Drupal-based website based on feedback from our users. Current VALE Website Too much text on front page. Hard to locate important info. Not clear who the audience is. Visitors are not able to leave comments. Uses a WordPress blog and a Flickr account to display news items, photos and conference updates. Integration with Web 2.0 tools. • Survey Outcomes • Graphics are too large, layout is dated • Committees need ability to update own content and contribute news items • More integration between website and blog • More photos of institutions and members • Needs a comments feature • Add NJKI, Committees, Events and OLS as a menu items • No “wow” factor with the website • Quicker ability to subscribe to VALE Listserv • Important information is buried • Users want ability to subscribe to updates (minutes, agendas, etc.) Most content is stored on static html pages and is deeply buried. Requires HTML skills in order to update content. Google Calendar embedded into the VALE website to list events and meetings. Users can send comments and suggestions, and subscribe to updates. Rotating pictures highlighting hot issues happening in the community. Not easy to add/update content. Organization relies on a small group that has access to server, and HTML skills to update content. Content is frequently out-of-date. Drupal provides an easy means to add/update content, using a WSIWYG editor.
