The Cause • The horrific American Civil War lasted from 1861-1865. Confliction occurred after the election of Abraham Lincoln, who didn’t believe in slavery. • Eleven Southern states, which depended on slavery formed the confederate states of America, which wanted to keep slavery in the country.
The Evolution of War • With all the pain and suffering from brother against brother combat, came new technology in medicine, engineering, and every day living. • Injured combatants were able to get artificial limbs, with the improvement in the medical field. In addition treatments for ancient diseases were discovered, and able to be applied to the injured. • Transportation became more efficient, and the first blimp was tested.
A Shift in Perspectives • As all the men were out fighting for their cause, women were put into different fields of work. For the first time women became teachers, and nurses. • The war revealed the importance of women, and their role in society. Before the civil war, women were undervalued, and looked at as a weaker gender.
Strategic competition • The rush to deliver weaponry and care to troops on both sides of the civil war brought alternatives to original travel, this is why the civil war was also a industrial war. • Steamboats, and railroads were annexed in order to gain faster delivery to the regiments. Train were one of the biggest parts of transportation between the American regiments. Trains were used to move almost everything from the east to west and vice versa. Also trains were used for soldiers that needed immediate care.
Combat • After years of fighting, Americans utilized trench combat which provided safer, and more hidden ways of firing at the enemy. • Both sides used trench warfare, which involves shooting in a trench with a group for body protection. • At times soldiers would leave the trench, and charge head on towards the enemy, skyrocketing fatalities.
The Victor • After many battles, and deaths, the Confederates lost the war. Slavery was soon after abolished, however things didn’t become much better for the African Americans until long after. • Slaves were released from their masters, but some of them claimed that slavery provided them housing, food, and a job. There were many negative externalities that came with the abolishment, but was the first step to establishing a free country. • Although the Civil war was unfortunate, it developed the country morally, and technologically.
