Functional Skills http://developments.edexcel.org.uk/fs The 14-19 and Skills White Papers in England announced the introduction of ‘functional’ English, Mathematics and ICT qualifications for young people These functional skills are practical skills that allow individuals to operate confidently, effectively and independently Functional Skills exist as stand-alone qualifications and also form part of GCSEs in English, Mathematics, ICT, Diplomas, Apprenticeships and the Foundation Learning Tier • Assessment (currently) will cover 3 skill areas at Entry level, Level 1 to Level 2: • using ICT systems • using ICT to find information • communicating information using ICT Functional Skills at Level 2 (a key milestone) will become a requirement for certificating a GCSE and is also a compulsory element of the Diploma The standards for Level 3 development are currently in the pipeline

Achievement and Attainment Tables  (30/04/2008) Functional Skills Functionalskillsict@edexcelexperts.co.uk It should be noted thatMathematics and English will play a significant part in the delivery of ICT functional skills. Entry Level 1Entry 1 = 5 points     Entry 2 = 6 points    Entry 3 = 7 points Level 1Each qualification is worth 12.5 pointsEach qualification contributes 10% towards threshold(Short Course GCSE Grade E = 14 points, F = 11 points)Level 2Each qualification is worth 23 pointsEach qualification contributes 10% towards threshold(Short Course GCSE Grade B = 23 points)What does this mean?Each Functional Skill is equivalent to half a GCSE at Level 1 and Level 2. This is similar to Basic Skills (Adult Literacy and Numeracy). Level 2 discounts Level 1.

On-going developments The ICT department at Deptford Green is currently reviewing the process for a targeted Yr 9 cohort to sit the Level 1 / 2 entries in 2009 It would seem apparent that co-ordination between English, Mathematics and ICT would be beneficial to these departments Functional Skills will be a statutory curriculum requirement by 2010
