Census of Industry • Started in 1946 covered the sectors Agriculture and Industry • Census of Industry 2003/2004 is the last in the series of censuses • Covered the Establishments • having production facilities • Keep separate accounts • with proper management and location

Census of Industry (Cont.…) • Listing Operation • Using listing form of census of population and housing industries were extracted to separate forms for smaller geographical areas • Updated list was prepared by sending it to the field (Districts)
Census of Industry (Cont.…) • Data Collection • Data collection was done by dividing these industries in to two parts • Industries with persons engaged 25 or more were fully enumerated • Industries with persons engaged 5-24 were covered by a sample survey
Economic Census 2013/2014 • The decennial Census of industries has been replaced by the Economic Census 2013/14 this time • Coverage • All the units which engaged in any economic activity are covered
Annual Survey of Industries • DCS Started to conduct the Annual Survey of Manufacturing Industries (ASMI) in 1979 • After the Census of Industry in 1983 ASMI was replaced by Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) • From 1984 ASI is conducted by DCS Annually • The 27th ASI series was conducted in 2012.
Annual Survey of Industries (Cont….) • Coverage ( ISIC Rev. 3.1 ) • Mining and Quarrying • Manufacturing • Generation, Distribution of Electricity, Gas and Water • Complete enumeration –Persons engaged 25 and more • Sample enumeration – Persons engaged below 25 • Sample Design is a three stage stratified sampling • According to geographical location (Administrative districts) and Industries (ISIC 2 digit level) and size of persons engaged
Survey method • The survey part was further Stratified according to Geographical location, Industrial activity and Size classes to persons engaged . • Geographical strata – 24 Administrative Districts • Industrial Activity - 2 digit Industry Divisions • Size classes - Persons engaged size classes as 5-9, 10-24
Type of industry • The ASI is mainly categorized under three Industry Types according to no of persons engaged. • Large, Medium & Small and Micro Large – 25 or more persons engaged Medium & Small - 5 to 24 persons engaged micro- Less than 5 persons engaged
Method of data collection • For the ASI 2012 a total no. of 6326 establishments had been selected. • ASI is a postal Survey • But the Field officers of the DCS are sent to the non responding establishments to get higher percentage of response
