  3. Ratio example #1 • Tell what you would multiply to one or both of the ratio’s to make them equivalent. 1 = 6 5 30 6 · 1 = 6 6 5 30 6 = 6 30 30 Solution • Do we have to multiply something to both ratio’s or just to one of them? • We only have to multiply to the 1/5. • What can I multiply to 1 to make these ratio’s 5 equal? • I can multiply 6/6 to 1/5 to make the ratios equal. 6 5

  4. Ratio Example #2 • Tell weather these ratios a proportional (equal ). 6 = 9 10 15 15 · 6 = 10 · 9 90 = 90 Solution • When you are trying to tell if two ratios are equal to each other what do we do? • We cross multiply the denominators. • Are these two ratios equal YES or NO 90

  5. Proportion Example #3 • Solve the proportion. c = 6 6 9 9 · c = 6 · 6 9c = 36 9c= 36 9 9 c = 4 Solution • What is the unknown or variable in this problem? • The unknown is c. • What did we do in example 2 to see if the two ratios were equal? • We crossed multiplied. • After we cross multiply what inverse oper. Do we use to solve for C. • We use inverse of mult. and divide by 9 to both sides of the equation C = 4

  6. Proportion Example #4 • Solve the proportion. 8 = a 12 9 9 · 8 = a · 12 72 = 12a 72 = 12a 12 12 a = 6 Solution • What is the unknown or variable in this problem? • The unknown is a. • What did we do in example 2 to see if the two ratios were equal? • We crossed multiplied. • After we cross multiply what inverse oper. Do we use to solve for A. • We use inverse of mult. and divide by 12 to both sides of the equation A = 6
