11&12: Proportional Reasoning Building to More Complex Relationships Shirley Dalrymple Liisa Suurtamm Karen Timson
Welcome • Should we do an around the room – hi my name is…. Before we do the beach ball?
Beach Ball Introductions • In small groups, pass the beach ball to each other. • When you catch the beach ball, answer the question that is closest to your left thumb.
Group Norms • All ideas will be listened to carefully and responded to respectfully • Everyone will have a voice • All questions and comments will be presented with the intent to move the collective forward • Clarifying questions are welcome • Everyone will engage fully in the moment
Session Goals • Explore the Big Ideas of Proportional Reasoning • Make connections between course expectations to the Big Ideas of Proportional Reasoning • Practice matching problems involving proportional reasoning to the Big Ideas
Let’s do some math…. • Select one of the problems on the page and complete it. • Once you have completed the problem consider: • In what ways did you, or could you have, used proportional reasoning when solving the problem • What big idea(s) might be addressed with the problem you chose?
Standing conversations…. • Find someone in the room who completed the same problem as you. • Have a conversation about what proportional reasoning was involved and which big idea(s) you think the problem might connect to.
Matching Expectations to Big Ideas • Choose one of the sets of expectations that you are familiar with • Work as a team to determine which Big Idea each expectation connects to (try to narrow it down to one) • Place each expectation on the chart paper with the Big Idea you connected it to MCT 4C MHF 4U MCR 3U MCF 3M MEL 3E MBF 3C MCV 4U MDM 4U MEL 4E MAP 4C
Gallery Walk Take a few minutes to walk around and look at the expectations under each Big Idea and consider whether you agree or disagree with their placement.
Thoughts… • Were some Big Ideas easier to match to than others? Which ones? • Do some courses seem to have more proportional reasoning than others? Which ones? • Was there anything that stood out for you during this activity?
Inside/Outside Circle Respond to one of the following with each partner: • “I think the value of focusing on the same Big Ideas in proportional reasoning from K – 12 might be that….” • Did you have any “aha” moments today, or were there ideas that challenged your thinking? If so, what?
