Affecting Health – Fight or Flight • When you perceive a stressor, your brains triggers an alarm system called fight or flight • This allows you to be prepared to either fight or fee to safety • This occurs even in non-life threatening situations • This is will increase your heart rate, blood pressure, make energy readily available, heighten your senses.
Affecting health • Cortisol is released as part of the stress response • It suppresses non-essential functions during stress: immune, digestion, and reproductive systems; it will also promote hunger and fat storage • Once the stressor is eliminated, hormones and responses are brought back to homeostasis • EXCEPTION: if you are constantly under stress of this nature, cortisol levels and other stress responses are constantly in affect
Affecting Health • Constant stress causes constant hormone release • Will maintain your elevated Blood pressure, Heart Rate, suppressed immune function, digestive and reproductive problems. Stress can affect every system in your body! • Additionally, surges of these hormones through your blood stream can cause damage to your blood vessels promoting heart disease and stroke
What you can do! • Prevention • Relaxation – yoga, meditation, tai chi, massage • Physical activity • Social support • Get plenty of sleep
Activity • For a week, write out your stress levels throughout the day. Also, take note of your mood and/or any other affects (anxious, trouble sleeping, hunger levels) • Did you notice anything interesting? Was the weekend different from the week?
