Definition • Visually descriptive language that encapsulates all figurative language especially similes and metaphors. • Imagery uses descriptive words and phrases to paint a mental image in the reader’s mind. • Helps the reader understand the text better and to make it more interesting. It is like storytelling in a visual form, like a mental movie.
Definition • Imagery is a strong, descriptive language that appeals to the five senses • Auditory- hearing • Gustatory- taste • Tactile- touch • Olfactory- smell • Visual- sight
Sentence Examples • Auditory such as Onomatopoeia- The water plopped into the pond./ The criminal was shot in the back with a loud bang. • Gustatory- After being knocked over by a wave, Bill’s mouth filled with the burning and bitter taste of the ocean. • Tactile- While being pricked with a needle a the hospital, pain rushed down my arm. • Olfactory- The aged red wine smelled of the oak barrel and the musty stench of the cellar. • Visual- The shadows in the room crisscrossed each other as the red-orange sun went down into the horizon.
