Provides exceptional resources to medical practices. Objectives: Help medical practices to: Find the best fit EHR software for a medical practice. Facilitate the use of an EHR to achieve “Meaningful Use” for qualifying for Federal Incentives.

  3. The Federal Incentive Program • Government Stimulus package • $20B for EHR implementation • Money for hospitals and “Eligible Providers” • “Eligible Provider” is a doctor that: • Accepts either Medicare or Medicaid and, • Uses a certified system as a “meaningful user”

  4. NJ HITEC • NJ HITEC Mission • To assist 5,000 primary care providers in the State of NJ adopt EHR systems and achieve “Meaningful Use.” • NJ HITEC is based at the NJ Institute of Technology. • Team consists of practitioners and academics.

  5. NJ HITEC Services Provides education and updates on EHR. Provides members with consulting services for assessing a practice and matching the practice with the “best fit” EHR. Provides project management support to ensure EHR vendors deliver a working system. Provides help and education on “Meaningful Use.”

Federal Incentive Recap • $44,000 to eligible providers • Payments spread over five years • First year of eligibility is 2011 • Eligible providers must have at least $24,000 in Medicare billing • Eligible providers must use a certified system • Eligible providers must “meaningfully use” the software

  8. Government Payments - Medicare Dollars are in thousands. Practice must adhere to EHR “Meaningful Use” guidelines prior to year in left column. Payment method is yet undefined.

  9. Penalty for Non-Compliance • Starting in 2015 • Medicare reimbursement reduced by 1% • Each Successive Year • Penalty increases an additional 1% • Maximum of 95% reimbursement

  14. 2. Evaluate EHR Options • EHR needs assessment • Integration with PM system • Identify three certified EHR providers • Participate in vendor presentations • Consider needs of your specialty • Visit practices using the software

  15. 3. Demystify Vendor Proposals Compare vendor proposals Functionality Pricing Training Required subscriptions Maintenance and support Hardware and third party software needs

  16. 4. Plan for EHR Implementation Establish Project Team Develop Implementation Plan Train, test and practice Build and test Work flow procedures Encounter templates Adjust work schedules On-site and remote support on “go live” date Expect problems and plan for them!

  17. 5. Fund the Project • Total project cost • Effect on cash flow • “Construction” and term funding • Federal Incentive payments • Five years support for “meaningful users” • Cash flow impact should be minimal

April 26, 2011, Too Late? • Typical vendor selection takes 3 to 6 months. • Implementation after signing a vendor agreement is normally 3 to 6 months. • Add 2 to 4 months for Practice Management. • EHR module needs to be run for at least three months before achieving Meaningful Use. • If a practice hasn’t selected and entered into a contract, it is too late for 2011 filing.
