  3. Think you're ready for this race? How much do you know about space?

  4. Ready to Launch to your Cosmic Quest • You and 2 other space cadets will form a space travel team. You will be going on a space race, traveling through the solar system to locate information related to our solar system. The first space travel team to complete the race and arrive at Southey’s launching pad (my desk) will receive a Mars Bar. All other participants will receive a Starburst upon completing their quest. • Click on the following link to begin your journey. Good luck and Full Speed Ahead! Cosmic Questions

  5. Mercury • Closest planet to the sun • Use this link to fill in the chart with information on Mercury.

  6. Venus • Venus and Earth are almost the same size. • Use this link to fill in the chart with information on Venus.

  7. Earth • The only planet that is known to support human life. • Do you think there are other planets that have people or life on them? Why or why not? • Use this link to fill in the chart with information on Earth.

  8. Mars • Mars has a volcano that is much taller than our Mt. Everest. • Take a trip to Mars on the following site: http://www.dustbunny.com/afk/planets/ • Compare and contrast Mars to Earth using this diagram. • Now explain why scientists might be “hot on the trail” investigating Mars.

  9. Jupiter • Jupiter’s large red spot is actually a huge storm! • Use this link to fill in the chart with information on Jupiter.

  10. Saturn • Saturn is famous for its beautiful rings. • Use this link to fill in the chart with information on Saturn.

  11. Uranus • Uranus appears to be sideways in space. Maybe it was hit by a flying object!!! • Use this link to fill in the chart with information on Uranus.

  12. Neptune • Neptune sometimes changes places with Pluto as they orbit the Sun. Talk about Trading Spaces! • Use this link to fill in the chart with information on Neptune.

  13. Pluto • Pluto is the smallest of all the planets in our solar system. • Use this link to fill in the chart with information on Pluto.

  14. Quest Conquered • Congrats, space cadets! You have completed your cosmic quest. Remember to go to the launch pad (my desk) for your celestial treat.

  15. Math Connection • Students would survey classmates to ask what planet they would live on if they could choose any of the nine in our solar system. • Students would graph the collected data using MS Excel or other graphing software.
