5 of the most iconic dishes across breakfast, lunch and dinner from the world’s best cuisines It’s no easy feat trying to choose 5 iconic dishes across, breakfast, lunch and dinner, from a wide array of world cuisines! But we’re always up for epicurean lists, so we’ve compiled a list of what we believe are the most iconic dishes from among the many cuisines of the world, with one small caveat. That being that these dishes are rather universal and can be enjoyed by the Indian consumer, as they are familiar to our palate! 1. Breakfast: Huevos Rancheros Country of Origin: Mexico
This Mexican delicacy roughly translates to ‘ranch-style’ eggs. As with many dishes in Mexican cuisine, this one is a hearty mixture of fried eggs, over easy, lightly charred corn, pico-de-gallo, black beans and a meat or veggie accompaniment. First made popular by Mexican cowboys or gauchos, this is a dish that is both rich and sustaining. The best part is that it is extremely easy to assemble. 2. Breakfast: Ful Medames Country of Origin: Egypt Our next breakfast contender comes from the land of the Pharaohs. Somewhat ironically though the dish in question is a peasant dish. Said to have been invented around the time of the rise of nationalisation in Egypt this breakfast also features eggs, boiled this time, served with a lentil, or pinto bean stew, eaten with coarse local bread and is reportedly excellent! 3. Brunch: Pancakes with Maple Syrup
Country of Origin: US / Canada No list of the world’s most iconic foods would ever be complete without pancakes. And while these have been around for hundreds of years, this particular version was made popular as ‘continental breakfasts’ by hotels in the States and Canada. Teamed with Grade A Canadian Maple Syrup, few other brunch time favourites can hold a candle to this universal favourite! Though a close second would be waffles! 4. Lunch / Dinner: Coq-au-vin Country of Origin: France
For a dish steeped in legend, and also in Burgundian Red Wine, you need look no further than Coq-au-vin or Chicken in Wine, A staple of French cuisine, this dish traces its roots to Julius Caesar and his Gaulish invasion. The recipe was first published in the early 20th century. This leads food historians to believe that a similar dish may have existed for centuries. The modern iteration of the dish calls for a dry red burgundy, mushrooms, lardons, and of course fresh and dry herbs, and garlic! 5. Lunch / Dinner: Cheeseburger Country of Origin: United States
While a patty between breads has been around for centuries, the cheeseburger is rightfully claimed by the US, as a national obsession. In a country that boasts a lively grilling culture, the cheeseburger is a big deal. Just how big? Well whole state fairs, truck stops, food trucks and entire franchises are dedicated to the American cuisine’s obsession! Don’t you dare forget the pickles, and other fixings!
