Module 8Series in AACR2 and RDA: What’s the same? What’s different?
General • Documentation (RDA Toolkit replaces AACR2, LC-PCC PSs replace LCRIs) • New conceptual framework, with related vocabulary changes --Authority data for Series: attributes of Work, Expression, Manifestation • Most instructions same, but may be a challenge to find: --Because they migrated from LCRIs to LC-PCC PSs --Because of navigation differences between AACR2 and RDA • New fields, new options to add information to SARs • Roles have changed (LC and PCC membership) • Standards are rapidly evolving
Specific • Sources of info --“Preliminaries” eliminated --Title embedded in text may be transcribed RDA 2.12.2.2 --Fewer brackets RDA 2.2.4 and LC-PCC PS --Priority order (unchanged, but navigation confusing) RDA 2.12.2.2 and 2.2.2.2
Specific (2) • Some kinds of guidelines and examples have been de-emphasized • Variant access points LC-PCC PS 6.27.4 • Use of carrier type as qualifier in authorized access point LC-PCC PS 6.27.1.9
Specific (3) • R.I.P. Rule of Three --Monograph series, serials: AAP still usually title --Multipart monographs: more name/title AAPs • Conflicts --Any other work (series, serial, monograph or integrating resource)with identical authorized access point prompts us to add qualifier; so, more qualifiers LC-PCC PS 6.27.1.9
Specific (4) • No hybrid AAPs (name & title must be RDA) • Family as creator: possible now • Unclear: • Initialism/Full form RDA 2.12.2.5 and 2.3.2.5 • Introductory phrases RDA 2.3.1.6 and LC-PCC PS 6.2.2.8
Specific (5) • For multipart monographs • Changes in the use of “Works,” “Selections,” and other terms for collective titles used for compilations • For Selections of the Complete Works of a creator, use the preferred title: “Works. Selections“ (NOT “Selections” only) LC-PCC PS 6.2.2.10.3 • “Works. Selections” is used for two or more works (but not all) in various forms. Do NOT apply it to two or more works in one form, even if creator is known to work in only one form. • For two or more works in one form, the concern about an “adequate” or “inadequate” title does NOT apply; LCRI 25.10 not brought forward to RDA.
Specific (6) • For multipart monographs • No more “Language & Language” additions to AAPs for translations with parallel texts LC-PCC PS 6.27.3 • LC no longer adding date to distinguish one translation from another; PCC practice pending LC-PCC PS 6.27.3
Specific (7) • Inaccuracies • When transcribing series title that includes an inaccuracy in the 490, do not add [sic] or bracketed correction RDA 1.7.9 • When transcribing series numbering that includes an inaccuracy in the 490, do not add bracketed correction RDA 2.12.9.3 BUT • Inaccuracies are corrected in the AAP (both titles and numbering) LC-PCC PS 6.2.2.8, etc. • Parallel titles • May be transcribed from any source RDA 2.12.3.2
Specific (8) • Abbreviations in captions • In 490, transcribe as they appear; in AAPs, substitute prescribed abbreviations RDA 2.12.9.3 & 24.6.1.3 • Roman numerals • Transcribe as they appear LC-PCC PS 1.8.2 • Ordinal numbers • Instructions have 4 categories of languages RDA 1.8.5
Specific (9) • Source citations: 670 and/or $v, $u DCM Z1 046 • Related resources --Relationship designators RDA Appendix J; MARC21 5xx --Republications/Reproductions RDA 2.12.1.3; LC-PCC PS 27.1; DCM Z1 64x • 670 & 675 redefined (at same time as RDA, but not because of RDA) MARC21 for Authorities, 670 & 675
Conclusion • If you have questions that your local trainer or institution’s NACO liaison cannot answer, the Library of Congress will be setting up a new email account for questions related to series. These questions will be forwarded to a list of active PCC series catalogers for resolution. Look for announcement of the email account on the PCC list. • Once you are ready to begin contributing RDA series authority records, contact the same email account to set up the review process associated with this Bridge Training. • Thank you, and good luck!
Conclusion • If you have questions that your local trainer or institution’s NACO liaison cannot answer, the PCC has set up an email account (series@indiana.edu) for questions related to series. These questions will be forwarded to a list of active PCC series catalogers for resolution. • Once you are ready to begin contributing RDA series authority records, contact series@indiana.edu to receive details about options for next steps associated with this Bridge Training. • If you are already independent for RDA NARs and were independent for AACR2 SARs, you have the option of working with your current reviewer to begin contributing RDA SARs • If you would like a reviewer for RDA SARs, the Series Training Task Group is willing to provide one • Thank you, and good luck!
