Editor:While supporting PBR and SEAL operations in the delta, our gunship crashed. Trapped for four hours, I was forced to look into the bloody face of my young crewman. My tour in Vietnam was ended after 350 combat missions. Years later, I survived the fiery crash of a P-3Orion and a great fear of flying gripped me. Years of drugs for pain and depression, along with alcohol abuse, resulted in my being diagnosed by the VA with having chronic PTSD.I was fearful, angry and guilt-ridden, especially over the death of my young crewman. No one was able to understand me or help my downward spiral to suicide. My wife divorced me; my children severed all communication from me. I ended up at Palomar Mountain, Calif. in a small Air Stream trailer with my small dog and many guns. I had evolved into a "trip wire vet," alone in the world. In 2005 the decision was made to terminate the misery that life had become. I selected the gun, the place and the day. One afternoon I responded to a knock on my door and there stood an older gentleman who said 10 words to my face, and the desire to commit suicide instantly departed. I found soon after that he was a retired Marine Corps Recon Officer with two tours in Vietnam. It was over a year before he explained what he had said to me on that sunny afternoon. As of June, 2010, I'm still in that trailer now parked in Camp Verde, with my small dog. My life is now full of joy and peace with a great desire to help all the Vets who still suffer with what the world calls PTSD. The Camp Verde Café is my hangout every morning for breakfast, seven days a week from 8-9 a.m. As you come in, you will see my Vietnam cap on the table to the right front. You can ask for David; all the help knows me. I'm looking forward to meeting you my brothers and sisters.P.S. My family is coming around.David Milbourne, AD-1 USN (Ret.)Camp Verde http://campverdebugleonline.com/main.asp?SectionID=36&SubsectionID=73&ArticleID=31709
