What is acceleration? • Acceleration is not rocket science! • Acceleration may seem tough but it is a lot like speed in terms of the calculations. • Acceleration is the rate of change in the speed of an object over time.
The Acceleration Formula • The formula for acceleration is show below: a = Δv Δt • In this formula… • “a” is for acceleration. • “Δv” is change in speed. (Δv = v2 – v1) • “Δt” is for change in time. (Δt = t2 – t1) • There is also a formula triangle for acceleration – use the Δv a Δt
Types of Acceleration • Average acceleration – The total change in speed divided by the total time elapsed. • Constant acceleration – The same change in speed occurs for each successive unit of time. Positive & Negative Acceleration • Positive acceleration is another way of saying you’re speeding up. • Negative acceleration (aka deceleration) is known as slowing down.
