Native format • • Is it possible to open a .wmv or a .mov file in Illustrator and edit the file? Why or why not? • Can you open an Adobe Illustrator file in Microsoft PowerPoint?
Native format •is the default format for a specific software application, like InDesign or Illustrator •is not meant to be transferred to another application •allows the file to be edited by the application
Native format File extensions: Adobe InDesign: .indd Adobe Illustrator: .ai Microsoft Word: .doc Photoshop: .psd PowerPoint: .ppt

Answer • The file must be saved or exported into a file format that is recognized by other programs.
Graphic formats Printing industry uses • EPS (.eps) (Encapsulated Postscript) • JPEG (.jpg) (Joint Photographic Experts Group) • TIFF (.tif) (Tagged Image File Format) • PDF (.pdf) (Portable Document Format) • PNG (.png) (Portable Network Graphic)
Text format ASCII text •can be imported into any program •has no formatting (fonts, tab settings, size, etc) •extension: .txt
Web formats Formats compress files to make them smaller. Lower quality than tiff and EPS. A. JPEG .jpg B. Gif .gif

Portable Document Format • Can be opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader--free to anyone on any platform • Used for emailing and storing documents on the web • Used for moving files through the printing process • Able to include any text and graphics as a single file • Printable • Good for SOFT PROOFS
