Fuel • The industrialized world consumes enormous amount of fuels that are nonrenewable resources • The earth harbor only finite amounts of coal, oil, and natural gas. • These supplies will run out unless alternates are found • Biofuel is one very promising option
Methane • Its natural gas produced by anaerobic bacteria in swamps and landfills • It could be renewable source in future • These bacteria are inexpensive to culture, as they use domestic, agriculture waste and industrial effluents as nutrients for growth • Methanogens are anaerobic organisms and cannot function under aerobic conditions
Hydrogen • Its extremely attractive energy source because its combustion produce only energy and water • There are some problems to adopting hydrogen as fuel • Its extremely combustible; there are concern for its storage • High cost of its extraction • Bacterial fermentation is one option, as hydrogen can be harnessed from the metabolism of bacteria • Bacterial enzyme hydrogenase readily produce hydrogen gas from two hydrogen ions • Clostridium bacteria and Chlorella (algae)
