FYI • WWII was from 1939-1945 • Axis- Italy, Germany • Allies- France, Britain, China, Soviet Union, and U.S. • Devon is based on the real Phillips Exeter Academy where Knowles attended school in the 1940’s. • 1940– U.S. Gov. instituted the first peacetime draft in nation’s history ( men 21-35 required for military service)

  4. Characters • Gene Forester: protagonist, somewhat cynical of Finny • Phineas (Finny)- nonconformist– challenges school rules and tradition… organizes Super Suicide Society of the summer session. Great athlete. • Brinker Hadley- an elitist student leader, somewhat jealous of Finny • Edward Lepellier- isolationist that is ridiculed by peers, later enlists in the paratroopers

  7. John Knowles…continued • *1949-graduated from Yale  *won the William Faulkner Foundation Award  *1981-writes a sequel to A Separate Peace • *He wrote other novels, but none of his other works were nearly as popular/successful

  8. Knowles… • *He usually does not give any interviews, but communicates in his writing (like Harper Lee) • *A Separate Peace started as a short story, but developed into a novel.  • *It is a coming of age novel about the lessons learned growing up
