  1. Art Nouveau What is Art Nouveau? When was the style fashionable? Give dates to and from) What shapes and forms make something recognisable as being in the style of Art Nouveau? Name three designers who worked in the Art Nouveau style and say what kind of work they did. Name two artists who worked in the Art Nouveau style. Why do you think the artists and designers liked this style of designing (Write at least 25 words) Do you like this style of design? Why?/Why not? (Write at least 25 words) What is the difference between Art and Design?

  2. What? When? Where? Art Nouveau (New Art) was an international style of decoration and architecture which developed in the 1880’s and 1890’sand was popular until the 1920’s and 1930’s. The movement began in Paris and spread throughout Europe and America. It was called different names in different countries.

  3. Hector Guimard (Paris Metro) Why? A new group of artists wanted to invent a style of art which would make use of new materials. Architects wanted to experiment with glass and iron which allowed them to make use of curved lines, rather than the straight, solid forms that had been used in the past.

  6. Style Although the style of Art Nouveau varied slightly from country to country, in general it can be recognised by the use of flowing lines based on natural forms. Plants, flowers , shells and animals were all sources of inspiration for designers

  7. The style influenced all kinds of design from illustration, to architecture, interior design, furniture, graphic design and jewellery.

  9. Antoni Gaudi (Architect, Barcelona)

  10. Antoni Gaudi designed an entire house in Barcelona where no wall was straight. He also had to design special curved furniture to fit into the rooms

  11. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish Architect and Interior Designer.

Dulac (Illustrator) His work covers a wide range of themes and styles, and is characterized by the strongly defined personality of the people he depicts and the elaborate backgrounds and shading of his scenes Dulac is best known for his illustrations of the Arabian Nights and various fairytales.
