Lesson Goal: Mount your best writing piece AND illustration to a display spread in preparation for the upcoming Academic Fair. Outcomes: Be able to . . . Demonstrate your ability to look at, listen to, and follow detailed step-by-step directions. Mount your best writing piece AND your illustration correctly to a display spread.
Starter #1: Today we will mount your “best writing piece” and your corresponding illustration. Mrs. D will provide the display spreads and the glue sticks. Note the color code: Lit 6 – 1 Blue folders (Stein’s homeroom) Lit 6 – 2 Purple folders (Donohue’s homeroom) Lit 6 – 3 Red folders (Reid’s homeroom)
Starter #2: It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you LOOK, LISTEN, and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. If you don’t follow directions, you will have messed up the only display spread I have for you. Then you will have to spend time during a recess detention or an after-school detention to do another display with one-on-one assistance from Mrs. D.
Starter #3: Please take out a sharp pencil. I’m going to hand each one of you a blank sheet of paper. With that paper I want you to center it perfectly on the left side of the spread and hold it so it doesn’t move. Then, with your pencil, lightly make four L-shaped marks at each corner. Now move your blank paper to the right side of the spread and carefully center it. Without moving the paper, carefully make four L-shaped marks on that side of the spread.
Starter #4: Now take your illustration, turn it face down, and carefully apply the glue stick to the back by making a straight line as close to each edge as you can. Then make one giant “X” with the glue stick to cover the inner portion, and place your illustration on the left side of the spread. Now take your writing piece. How many of you have a writing piece that is more than one page? Before we paste your piece, if your piece is more than one page, it should first be stapled on both the right side and left side. Starter #5: Now take your writing pieceand turn it face down, and it doesn’t matter whether your piece is one page or more than one. Carefully apply the glue stick to the back side. If your piece is more than one page, you are putting glue only on the last page. Using the glue stick, make a straight line as close to each edge as you can. Then make one giant “X” with to cover the inner portion, and place your writing piece on the right side of the spread. Each student must show me his/her finished spread. If you didn’t follow directions, you will be seeing me at recess today. Writing Piece Illustration
Starter #6: When everyone has finished, we will evaluate the quality of your illustration and how well you placed it within the construction paper frame. Take out a sheet of paper. Prepare to write down students’ names as I list them (in order, by rows). For each illustration you see, ask yourself: Does this represent quality work? Would you describe it as “excellent”? Does this show great effort and creativity? How much time did this take to do? Is this illustration appropriate for its particular writing piece? Note that if you “borrowed” graphics (clip art or downloaded images), you should have used those in a collage, not as a single illustration. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 representing “Outstanding,” how would you rate this illustration? Keep in mind the questions listed above. Save these sheets, because tomorrow we evaluate the writing as you read aloud your work.
