Verse 1 • Leviathan - sea monster, dragon; ancient serpent • Job, Psalms—extinct sea animal (dinosaur) • Revelation—Satan (tormented/slain) • Sea often representative of chaos
Verses 2-8 • Vineyard reclaimed (ch 5) • Hebrew nation • Bloodshed instead of justice • Outcry instead of righteousness • Ready to defend, ready to reconcile • Israel large exporter of fruit and flowers • Contrast dealings with Israel/enemies • East wind = scorching, devastating • Babylon from the east (God’s instrument)
Verse 9 • Why? Atonement for their sin • Fruit (evidence) is abolishing of idolatry And I will scatter you among the nations, and I will unsheathe the sword after you, and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste. "Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths as long as it lies desolate, while you are in your enemies' land; then the land shall rest, and enjoy its Sabbaths. As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, the rest that it did not have on your Sabbaths when you were dwelling in it. - Lev 26:33-35 ESV

Verse 12 • A day of threshing is coming on the exiles • “One by one” As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, John answered them all, saying, "I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. - Luke 3:15-18 ESV
