  4. “Mrs. Smith, Do We Have to Write About a Lot of Ideas?”“….Yes, Yes You Do”  • Include author and title of poem • Identify theme of poem • Identify aspect of poem (aka: the dominant feature/the umbrella feature, the overall painting) • Identify at least 2 supporting features of poem (aka: under the umbrella, elements of the painting) • Be able to discuss what is going on in the poem accurately during your analysis(summary) • Show how supporting features make up the aspect/umbrella feature • Show how the supporting features and aspect communicate the theme of the poem • Use quotes to support statements

What is Expected of Us on a Poetry Analysis Timed Write in 9th Grade, Mrs. Smith? • 4 paragraphs • Introduction • IVF statement, theme statement, and thesis statement naming aspect and features • 1st Body paragraph • Explain feature 1, its connection to the aspect, and its connection to theme • Follow proper body paragraph format • 2nd Body paragraph • Explain feature 2, its connection to the aspect, and its connection to theme • Follow proper body paragraph format • Conclusion • Summary of ideas • Universal statement – usually relates to theme

  6. So…um..like…what are the features again? • Imagery • Tone • Mood • Sound • Irony • Characterization • Setting • Metaphor • Symbol • Speaker • diction • Remember, when looking at literary features, always ask yourself: SO WHAT? WHY DID THE AUTHOR USE/INCLUDE THIS? WHAT IS ITS PURPOSE?
