OUTCOMES OF WORKSHOP • To understand the roles and responsibilities of an announcer at a swim meet • To know how to prepare for announcing at a swim meet • To know what to do when arriving at a swim meet • To understand how to announce effectively at a swim meet • To learn top tips about announcing.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide announcements and information to ensure structure and control at a swim meet e.g. heats, finals • Provide safety information regarding the competition and venue • Inform on the policies and protocols for warm up, marshalling, presentation and protests • Work effectively as part of a meet management team to deliver a high quality swim meet • Comply with the requirements of the ASA Question: what about announcing disqualifications?
BEFORE THE SWIM MEET... Preparation, preparation, preparation! Question: What are the key areas to plan in advance of the swim meet?
KEY AREAS TO PLAN • Location • Equipment/systems being used • Music requirements • ASA Handbook (laws and prompt cards) • Knowing existing records • Knowing who you need to meet at the venue and who you will be reporting in to • Taking water/snacks with you
KEY EQUIPMENT • Watch /stopwatch • Announcers Friend software • Pens/pencils • Highlighters • Bulldog clips & string • Spare batteries • Spare paper • Paper clips • Stapler • Blue Tack • Sellotape • Scissors • CD’s/iPod • Extension lead • Water/drink
ARRIVAL Key points to check with : The Meet Director • Safety information • Music • Warm up • Lane drawers (if used) • Points scores • Sponsor acknowledgements • Presentations/ ceremonies • Whistle blasts being used • Cues for announcing • Raffle
ARRIVAL CONT/D • Familiarise self with the venue • Get to grips with the programme • Introduce self to others e.g. Referee, starter • Set you area/space up • Test the microphone and music before the meet!

HAVING A GO... • Welcome and health and safety • Arrangements for warm up • Ending warm up • Calling competitors • Introducing officials • Introducing heats and finals • Amalgamations, reseeds, disqualifications • Medal presentations • Ending the swim meet.
GENERAL POINTS • Remember your role in maintaining pace and flow of the swim meet • Avoid distractions • Only take instructions from the Meet Director • Holding the microphone correctly • Keep hydrated • Be accurate with facts – always double check if needed. • Keep announcements short and concise • Don’t be a comedian or biased in your opinion • Keep outwardly calm, even if you are seething inside • Enjoy yourself! AFTER THE SWIM MEET • Reflection, reflection, reflection! • Decide what you did well • Decide what you would do differently next time • Agree if you need to do any follow up work e.g. Observe another announcer, commentator etc.
