What you will know by the end of the year... • Changing patterns of marriage, cohabitation, separation, divorce, child-bearing and the life-course, and the diversity of contemporary family and household structures • The relationship of the family to the social structure and social change, with particular reference to the economy and to state policies • The nature and extent of changes within the family, with reference to gender roles, domestic labour and power relationships • The nature of childhood, and changes in the status of children in the family and society • Demographic trends in the UK since 1900; reasons for changes in birth rates, death rates and family size.
This session • All will identify the difference between a family and a household (including Murdock’s definition of a family) • Most will describe the main family types: nuclear, extended, single parent, reconstituted and beanpole • Some will review the benefits and drawbacks of each type of family
Starter • Mind map in pairs what the word FAMILY means to you.
Family Vs Household • FAMILY- A social unit living together • HOUSEHOLD- those who live under the same roof
Defining the Family… • George Murdock (1949) ‘A social group characterised by common residence, economic co-operation and reproduction. It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain a socially approved sexual relationships, and one or more children, own or adopted, of the sexually cohabiting adults.’

Nuclear Family Family group consisting of 2 generations i.e. parents and children living under same roof
Extended Family A family in which sons and daughters live in same neighbourhood as parents, see each other on regular basis and offer each other various kinds of support.
Reconstituted Family Step family
Beanpole family Four Generation family i.e. Including great-grandparents and great-grand-children.
Homework • Compare and contrast two different family types, including the benefits and drawbacks of each. (24 marks)
