What is a VPN? • Virtual Private Network • “Tunnels” through NSCC firewalls • Allows you to work on your NetID files as if you were in your office • Connects the remote computer to NSCC’s Administrative Network
How Do I Access My Files Without a VPN? Without a VPN connection, the only way to remotely access your NetID files is by using a secure file transfer program. These transfer programs allow you to copy a file to your off campus computer, edit the file, then copy it back to your NetIDand overwrite the older version INTERNET Free Secure Remote Access Programs Windows Mac OSX FileZilla* WinSCP DataFreeway Fugu* FileZilla Cyberduck Firewall Authentication * NSCC Supported NetID Storage
How Do I Access My Files With a VPN? The VPN connection creates a secure tunnel between the remote computer and NetID storage. This puts the remote machine on the NSCC Admin network. Through this tunnel, you can map your I: drive and M: drive and have access to any Outlook folders you have created in your Inbox. Additionally, you can open and save files as if you were in your office. Internet Firewall NSCC IT Services recommends a cable connection for best results. DSL works, but is somewhat slower than cable. Dial-up connections are not supported. VPN Authentication NetID Storage
Rules of Engagement • You must have up to date antivirus software and system patches • NSCC IT Services provides you with a form for your department head to sign authorizing the VPN account • NSCC IT Services gives you a CD with the VPN software for you to install on your remote system • You will be provided with a brief handout that has simple instructions for mapping drives, etc. • NSCC IT Services can only provide minimal troubleshooting support. We cannot work on your system. • You are responsible for keeping your VPN account private
