ACT English Strategies Iskills 4A Barron’s. ACT English, Reading, and Writing Workbook, 2nded. Linda Carnevale, ed. Hauppage, NY: Barron’s Educational Series, Inc. Print. Kaplan. ACT English, Reading, and Writing Workbook. New York, NY: Kaplan Publishing, 2011. Print.
Step 1: Read until you have enough information to identify the issue. • It is not enough to read JUST the underline passage. Sometimes you need the context, too. Read a little past the underlined part. A yellow LutinoCokatiel, Peaches n’ Cream was born on August 11, 2002, in East Northport Long Island, New York. A male bird, Peaches (as we call him for short) was named for the perfectly round, peach-colored circles on the sides of his cheeks and his soft, crème-colored feathers.
Step 1 continued: what are the possible issues? • Mechanics: sentence structure, clauses, run-on sentences. Make sure helping verbs are doing what they should, that sentences are not too long, and that all clauses are written correctly. • Punctuation: Look for wrong or missing punctuation, particularly commas, colons, semi-colons, dashes, and apostrophes. • Correct: the family’s car. Incorrect: three family’s. • Pronouns: make sure that the pronoun agrees with the verb, that the correct pronoun is used in the correct part of the sentence (I or ME), that ‘one’ and ‘you’ are not used together in the same sentence (pick one and stick with it!), which, who, whom (which only refers to things, who can be used in place of he or she, and whom in place of him or her)
Step 1 continued: what are the possible issues? • Verbs: verb tense, subject-verb agreement, improper use of adjectives or adverbs. • Rhetorical skills: author’s purpose, word choice, overall organization or structure of the passage, sentence or paragraph order. • Writing strategy: READ THE QUESTION VERY CAREFULLY! The keyword needed to answer it will be in the underlined passage. This relates to the author’s purpose. • Organization: Based on logic. Look at chronological order, sequence of events/steps, paragraph order. • Connections: look for transitional words that show connections and transitions.
Connection words • Connection words that show addition, continuation, emphasis, or examples: • Additionally, and, for example, for instance, furthermore, indeed, in addition, in fact, likewise, moreover • Connections that show cause and effect: • As a result, because, consequently, leading to, since, so, therefore, thus • Connections that show contrast: • Although, but, despite, even though, however, nevertheless, rather, though, whereas, while. • Connections that show sequence: • Finally, first, if . . . Then, last, later, next, second, then..
Step 1 continued: what are the possible issues? • Wordiness questions: just too many words! How can you make the sentence SOUND better by removing words or rewording a phrase? • Passive voice questions: AVOID using passive voice in writing! • Active voice: My FAMILY packed the CAR carefully before we left. • Passive voice: The CAR was packed carefully by my FAMILY before we left.
Step 2: Eliminate the answer choices that do NOT address the issue. • Process of Elimination. Get rid of any answer that you are sure is wrong. A yellow LutinoCockatiel, Peaches n’ Cream was born on August 11, 2002, in East Northport Long Island, New York. • NO CHANGE • East Northport; Long Island, New York • East Northport, which is the name of a town found on Long Island, New York • East Northport, Long Island, New York
Step 3: “plug in” the remaining choices and choose the one that seems most correct, concise, and relevant. In other words, the one that SOUNDS right. A yellow Lutino Cockatiel, Peaches n’ Cream was born on August 11, 2002, in East Northport Long Island, New York. • NO CHANGE • East Northport; Long Island, New York • East Northport, which is the name of a town found on Long Island, New York • East Northport, Long Island, New York • …was born on August 11, 2002, in East Northport, Long Island, New York OR • …was born in East Northport, which is the name of a town found on Long Island, New York
And the answer is… A yellow Lutino Cockatiel, Peaches n’ Cream was born on August 11, 2002, in East Northport Long Island, New York. • NO CHANGE • East Northport; Long Island, New York • East Northport, which is the name of a town found on Long Island, New York • East Northport, Long Island, New York
