  4. IronbridgesA major breakthrough in bridge technology came with the erection of the The Iron Bridge in Coalbrookdale, England in 1779. It used cast iron for the first time as arches to cross the river Severn 1779

  5. 1801 The first modern suspension bridge was created ,designed by judge James Finley

  6. 1870 A dramatic fall in the price of steel made steel bridges much more popular

  7. 1883 A monumental bridge, the Brooklyn Bridge, was completed.

  8. 1884 Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (who designed the Eiffel Tower) built a great steel arch bridge that overcame many structural problems by letting wind pass through his bridge.

  9. 1890 One of the early modern cantilever bridges was completed. It was designed by Benjamin Baker, an enthusiast of cantilever bridges.

  10. 1920-1940 Many great suspension bridges were built in America.

  11. 1950's A new type of girder called a box-girder was introduced. The box-girder made longer spanning bridges possible. It allows air to pass harmlessly around the structure.
