1801 The first modern suspension bridge was created ,designed by judge James Finley
1870 A dramatic fall in the price of steel made steel bridges much more popular

1950's A new type of girder called a box-girder was introduced. The box-girder made longer spanning bridges possible. It allows air to pass harmlessly around the structure.
