Year Group Promotion year (and YG) July through June • Flag Officer PY 2010: 2 July 2009 through 1 July 2010 • All other pay grades are 1 July through 30 June…less emphasis now on year groups for O-1 through O-6 Year group is based on date of rank Flag Officer promoted on 1 July 2010 or earlier;PY10 (YG10) Flag Officer promoted on 2 July 2010 or later;PY11 (YG11)
Promotions • RDML (O-7)(opening on the ADPL ) • Retirement • Additional flag positions • Promote to positions; currently 42 total positions • RADM (O-8) • Retirement • Additional flag positions • Equal or more (plus one) O-8 vs. O-7 positions
Continuation Board 14 USC 290 RADM Continuation • May look at flag officers with four years • Shall look at flag officers with five or more years • Continue not less than 50 percent & not more than 75 percent
Mandatory Retirement Whichever comes first: • Seven years combined service RDML/RADM(does not apply to VADM or USCGA Supt .) • 36 years active commissioned service (except ADM) • Age 62 (subject to change if Coast Guard Authorization Act approved)

IDPL Flag Officers Authorized two reserve flag billets (RADM/RDML) Not coupled with the ADPL Four years of service after appointment to RDML Promoted to RADM: • After serving two years as RDML • In case of a vacancy
